Leading By Example , Myth .... Or Fact ?
That was the focus of a pretty heated Debate i had with a fellow manager/Facilitator in Prudential This week .
Her : ...How can i ask someone to do a starclub when i've NEVER done one myself ??
Me : If that was true then you've doomed yourself and whoever joins you to NEVER achieve anything more than a QC in their careers . i'd strongly advise anyone keen to join your "family" to drop the notion !how will they feed themselves ??
Her : But you look at my Boss , She motivates me . She Inspires me . I should be a better leader .. i'll NEVER be like her ! *sighs*
Me : Why you wanna live in her shadow ? *Guffaws* Why [should ] be a better leader ? i don't wanna be a second rate / imitation Zinc , Tony Low Or Raymond Tan ! Even though they're the ones i always run to for advise or to save my impulsive ass and i respect and admire them !!!i constantly strive to REMAIN a 1st rate Kenneth Chiew and you know what ?? i Always succeed at it and i'm most Definitely happy all the time !!! O_O
Her : How do you and zinc get your agency and the peeps UNDER you two to come on time , and stay as motivated and driven as i've observed them over these past 8 months ? Teach me .. pRease ..
Me : Baby i can't man , you're crazay .. First off .. we're worlds apart , you and i , not to say i'm superior to you in ANY WAY but that we play according to our own , innate , personal Rhythm , our own innate tune ..and the sooner you come to terms with that , the better you'll perform .. and the happier you'll be . They're not our agency ... They're Family ... and they're not UNDER the two of us ... we're with THEM . we ARE them .

Be it life , career , peers , juniors , seniors , family .. But Lead , so that others may Lead .. or follow your LEAD .

It is not simple to be good leaders! Leaders are looked upon and respected by their followers themselves willingly. Respect should not be demanded but earned by the leaders through their leadership by example. This is how the game should be based on!!

ReplyDeleteSo it is the right mindset as well as the capabilities that will make a good leader! Just wanting to be is not good enough if you do not have the passion and empathy for people! There are some who have acquired and noticed them through experience in their lives much earlier. This could be the difference. Haha!

Uncle Samson is talkin about all the greats such as LOrd Jesus , Lord Buddha , Ghandi , Mother Theresa etc etc ... look how many followers / perpetuity and good they've manifested in the world ?
But think ANY ARMY that has ever existed .. Respect can ONLY be earned but when there isn't time to do it the easy way ... OBEISANCE is a far faster way of getting results .Imagine askin 400 men " shall we bring the tanks down to the water tomorrow ? " , i HAVE . Or leave it to the singapore citizens to volunteer themselves or their children for Enlistment towards the protection of our homes .

When left to their own devices , many would not choose what's for the Greater good . Just as Kindness and LOve does not [ in fact rarely ] begets Kindness or reciprocation .
There is a reason , methinks , why we have the lowest crime rates in the region and it always amuses me when our M'sian and Indonesian friends / customers slanders our Government and pity our citizens yet try EVERY means necessary to get citizenship once they start expecting their first child ... AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!

YET History has come to classify and constantly change their views on these men ... one thing remains CONSTANT tho' , emotions aside ... These men got things done .
Remember : HISTORY IS WRITTEN BY THE VICTORIOUS .
Not in direct relation, just a sudden thought: Almost everyone who joins our line CLAIMS to be entrepreneurs, their own bosses, yet the majority of them have an EMPLOYEE mindset. If left on their own, they probably can't even SMELL success. Some need discipline to be forced down their throats, whatever the taste or flavour. And this, I have taken enough time to understand and be convinced. And so to conclude, everyone is GUILTY of the employee mindest, until PROVEN INNOCENT. Instructions often have to be followed till you have proven that you don't need them.
ReplyDeleteAgree with the above comment! Many people will like to be in their comfort zone most of the time. Till they have understood of their own entrepreneurship and their mindset has changed, otherwise they will always fall back to do the familiar things that they are comfortable with, not realising that some of the actions are no more applicable when running their own business.
ReplyDeleteThere is alot of self discipline and hard work initially. Flexihours is only a benefit unless you are in proper control of the time and yourself. Anyway, all these have to be learnt and acquired by exposing yourself more to the skills by daily dealings as well as reading more related books to enhance the knowledge on how to run own business successfully! Thereafter, it is only the upkeeping and improvement that have to be done.
It is fortunate for our family members are able to have an conducive environment initially to catch up with the trade. This may not be so in other places and so please expedite your learning process and attain to the next level and understand yourself fast to be a competent peer in this trade! The training could be tough and sometimes unpleasant but remember that it will make you tougher to stand up to all tough challenges ahead in the career as well as the future!! Havew a good thought over it!
